Thekkady in Kerala State, India's largest wildlife sanctuary is a dream destination for any tourist visiting India . The 120 years old 'Surki' dam built across Peryiar, Poorna in Vedic parlance, is a major tourist attraction. This sanctuary is spread over an area of 777 Sq.Kms, surrounded by an artificial lake over an area of 25 Sq.Kms.The Country's sole Tiger reserve, Thekkady, with its bountiful treasures of tropical flora and fauna is the ultimate reservoir of many an endangered species and a rich tribal culture. Thekkady is a pleasant heaven on earth for those who love nature in its wild manifestations.
Periyar Tiger Reserve is also a place of immense adventure activities. The Forest Department offers a multitude of activities which will stoke the adventure spirit in you as well let you to explore the best of nature. Nature Walk, Green Walk, Bamboo Rafting, Tiger Trail, Border Hiking, Jungle Scouting and Pugmark Trail are important activities offered to tourists. Through Nature Walk and Green Walk, we get to observe birds and other wildlife in their natural habitat, feeling nature's whispers and sighs. By opting for Bamboo Rafting, we can witness a mosaic of habitats at a leisurely pace gliding past placid Periyar Lake. Tiger and pugmark trails are trekking programmes towards the deep the interiors of forest presenting you with fascinating photography opportunities.
Periyar Tiger Reserve offers 1.5 hrs boating trips at the lake near the sanctuary. A herd of elephants or a group of sambar deer are common sights near the lake. You may be able to spot herds of Gaur and wild boars in the grasslands adjacent to the shores. A variety of avian fauna such as darters, egrets and kingfishers can be seen resting on dead tree trunks that stick out over the lake. During your boat ride, there is also a high probability of observing the antics of the Smooth Indian Otter.

In the banks of Periyar Lake lays the pride of Kerala – The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park. This is a protected area placed in the Idukki and Pathanamthitta districts of Kerala. The sanctuary which borders with Tamil Nadu is located in the Cardamom and Pandhalam hills in the Western Ghats. The wildlife sanctuary is also famous for its tiger reserve and elephant reserve. Out of the total protected area of 925 sq km, the 350 sq km was declared as a national park in the year 1982. Often this park is addressed as either Periyar wild life sanctuary or Thekkady.
A hill station and hamlet in the Idukki district of Kerala, Ramakkalmedu is one of the most beautiful destinations in Kerala, which cannot be neglected while having a trip to the Gods Own Country. Ramakkalmedu is located in Karunapuram Panchayath, just 15 km east of Nedumkandam in Thekkady. Ramakkalmedu stands on the Western Ghats at an altitude around 3500 ft above the sea level.
